If you've ever taken a photo indoors, under warm light, and watched a face turn an unpleasant red or grey-green — that's not you, and it's not the lighting's fault either. Most likely it's the camera's white balance and tone mapping running a curve that wasn't tuned for your skin tone.
The image-processing algorithms on a phone (auto white balance, tone mapping) are trained and validated against a sample set. On most globally shipped devices, that sample set leans heavily toward lighter skin tones — not out of intent, but because that's where most historical validation data happened to concentrate. The result is a contrast curve and white-balance response optimised for a narrower band of skin tones than the real global user base.
Asian skin tends to reflect light differently — usually with a stronger warm red-yellow component than the default algorithm expects. Under tungsten light (the warm indoor light common in homes, restaurants and cafés across Vietnam and East Asia), this mismatch shows up the most: skin gets pushed too red, or the camera "over-corrects" it into a pale grey to compensate.

This is a technical problem, not a subjective one. The camera isn't "choosing" anyone — it's applying a correction function tuned best for one data distribution, and that distribution doesn't match every skin tone. The same mechanism that skews indoor shots under warm light also skews backlit shots and shots in dappled shade unpredictably.
Instead of letting one shared white-balance function treat every skin tone the same way, True Skin in LAM isolates the skin region within the frame and applies a hue/luma correction tuned specifically for the Asian skin spectrum, independent of the overall grade applied to the rest of the frame. In practice: the background still carries the full "character" of whichever film stock you picked, while skin is kept accurate instead of being dragged along by the background's colour cast or the ambient light.
LAM also offers a few different skin-tone modes (automatic based on lighting, or manual) — because a single fixed function still can't be right for every lighting situation, and you should be able to correct it yourself when the guess is off, rather than being locked into one result.
